My Photographic History and Philosophy

Starting with an old Agfa roll film fold-out camera when I was 14, I found photography to be a great tool for creative expression. As I became more technically proficient in landscape and architectural photography, the black and white medium allowed me to realize my photographic expression through the printing process. In the words of Ansel Adams “The photographic negative is the musical score and the photographic print is the performance”. Adams was a trained classical musician as well as one of the worlds most accomplished photographers.

My artistic vision is to capture the beautiful and interesting aspects of our world and bring  focus to it in a photographic image and print. I am not a professional photographer but over the years I have entered various photo contests winning or placing in most that I entered. Most notable is the Purdue University Grand Prize Winner (just a few years ago!). My photographs have been published in Shutterbug Magazine (Antelope Canyon, Oct 06 and Hong Kong Fireworks, April 06), “Ambient Light” (Lafayette, IN) and in the local paper, the Topeka Capital-Journal (Golden Gate Bridge, Slot Canyons, etc). My photos are on display in several local businesses, coffee shops and private homes. One local coffee shop, Coffee Break Cafe (coffeebreaktopeka.com) has chosen to exclusively dislplay my photographs of France and Italy. I travel extensively throughout the US and China in my profession as a VP of Product Development for an import company based in New York. My home base is Topeka, Kansas.

About The Website
Over the years, many family and friends have encouraged me to offer my photographs to the public and it is because of their encouragement that this website came to fruition.  The primary purpose of the website is to share my photographs with like minded lovers of the art. The secondary purpose is to offer a venue to sell the photographs to the public. For those who are interested, please visit the “Purchase Prints” page. Many of the photos will look great on a wall in your home or office while others, specifically some of the  China travel photos, are included in the website because of their uniqueness.
This website was not done professionally, but was put together by my college age daughter, Chelsea. She did a wonderful job and has been a joy to work with. Chelsea is a Journalism and Graphic Arts student at the University of Kansas.

Within the website you will find four galleries: Far Away places: which includes photos of my travels to Italy, France, Mexico, England and China. Landscapes: which of course includes landscapes but also cityscapes, some still life and a couple of surprises! Passageways: focuses on my strange interest in eclectic doors and windows from around the world. Infrared: showcases the many interesting aspects of black and white infrared photography. I will keep expanding all of the galleries, so visit often.

Photographic Process and Prints
Most of my current photos have been taken with one of several Rollei medium format cameras or a Mamiya 6 medium format on Fuji or Ilford film and scanned in a High Resolution Film scanner. I also use a Canon Digital and a Canon dedicated infrared digital camera. I have recently begun an adventure in large format 4x5 photography so you will find a few of these within the website as well.
All Photos not greater than 17” wide are printed in-house on my Epson 4800 Pro wide format archival printer. I can print photos as long as 48” or more with roll paper. Outside testing has verified longevity of prints to be over 100 years with the new Ultrachrome K3 Ink technology. The color and acutance of the prints is quite stunning. All of my in-house prints are done on beautiful German Hahnemuehle Fine Art Pearl, Photo Rag Pearl or on Epson Premium Luster. Photos larger than 17” wide will be printed through an outside source.
